Institute for Education and Development

The SFMA Institute for Education and Development has been delivering training to manufacturers for more than 30 years. Open Enrollment Classes are scheduled throughout the year for the convenience of members wanting one or a small group of employees to be trained. Customized On-Site training is designed and delivered as needed when more than eight people from one company needs the same training. Grant dollars are often available to help offset the cost of the training.

SFMA provides a wide variety of technical and non-technical training in multiple languages. We draw upon the expertise and resources of world-class trainers and subject matter experts in chosen fields. SFMA’s goal is to be the number one provider of training to South Florida Manufacturers.

Why use SFMA for your Training?

  • Trainers are local saving travel costs
  • Training specifically for manufacturers
  • Train in English and Spanish
  • Trainers are experts in their field
  • Training grants available to offset training costs – SFMA works with you to obtain grants.

With great success SFMA has helped member companies obtain more than $2 million in training grants over the past 4 years. Obtaining grant funds allows you to upgrade the skills of your employees, thereby improving the company’s competitive advantage, and to avoid layoffs due to inefficient workforce skills.

What training services does SFMA offer?

  • One-on-One Training – The SFMA has the ability to train as few or as many employees from your organization requiring skills upgrades in any of the available courses listed.

  • Open Enrollment Training– Most of our training courses are available in an open enrollment environment. This means your employees can attend SFMA training along with employees from other companies. The benefit of open enrollment training is a substantial reduction in cost.

  • On-Site Standard Training – The SFMA will bring its courseware and instructors to your site. The benefit of this format is all of your employees will be exposed to the same learning experience at the same time. An additional benefit of this type of training is the ability of your employees to have company specific conversations in their own environment.  For example, if there is a company specific problem that employees may feel uncomfortable discussing with other companies present, the instructor can address, analyze, and resolve these issues working with the in-house team.

  • On-Site Custom Training – Design and Develop– The SFMA can design and develop custom training, in any format, to meet your organization’s learning needs. This training can be geared toward the technical requirements of your production team or your management team’s strategic goals.

  • Design and Develop Your Company In-house Training Institute– The SFMA can design and develop training, which will capture specific knowledge within your organization. This knowledge will be converted into a series of courses, which will fulfill an organizational curriculum requirement. The developed training would be specific to your organization and solely owned by your training institute for unlimited future use. In this scenario, all training would include participant guides, instructor guides, presentation materials, and we would train-the-trainer.

Areas of Expertise include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Production Technician Certification – The Production Technician Certification is designed to validate that any individual with the certification has the technical as well as employability and academic skills needed to work in modern manufacturing. This Certification Standard was developed by the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) and endorsed by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM).

The MSSC Certification Training covers four core competency areas:

  • Manufacturing Processes and Production
  • Maintenance Awareness
  • Quality and Continuous Improvement
  • Safety

SFMA members are using the training and assessments to:

  • Identify and communicate a common shop language throughout the company
  • Challenge their workforce
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of the workforce (find skills gaps)
  • Establish a benchmark of skills within the corporation
