Our History

The SFMA was founded in 1961 as a non-profit trade association serving the manufacturing community and related industries. For more than 45 years, the SFMA's mission has been to promote the growth and economic well-being of South Florida's manufacturing industry by acting as a unified force, representing common interests, and providing needed benefits and services.  The SFMA provides manufacturers access to the latest technology, theories, and ideas in manufacturing; thereby bringing together a diverse group of manufacturing companies interested in benchmarking, sharing ideas, and learning how to be the best.

The SFMA is funded through a combination of membership dues, events, and grants. Membership in the SFMA is company based as opposed to individual membership. Membership at all times must be comprised of at least 70% manufacturing; no more than 30% support or related industries.

There are approximately 4,000 manufacturing companies in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties employing over 125,000 people. The SFMA has been instrumental in the creation and development of many different services, and has a reputation for innovation and creativity. The SFMA aggressively helps its member companies by providing key information, insight, and assistance when and where needed.

A growing area of focus is workforce development. This involves everything from recruitment to training. The SFMA has helped secure a number of grants for its member companies to help offset employee development costs.
