Our NEW program is our “CNC Set-Up and Programming for Mills and Lathes” is also a Competency Based Two Year Program which will begin in January 2018. Following are the two programs and the competencies that will be achieved in earning our State Certified and Nationally Recognized credentials:

Why a Competency Based Approach?

The focus is on what the apprentice learns, or already knows, and not how long they spend in class or learning a skill. The competency based approach provides the opportunity for the apprentices to move through the system at their own pace to build their portfolio of skills and credentials validating the acquired skill levels.

Training standards have been established to enhance learning for all apprentices through various methods to increase the assurance of learning. Three methods are incorporated: face to face in the classroom, on-line through a web based tool, and on-the-job learning at the apprentice sponsor’s workplace. Classroom: All classroom training is accomplished in the shop classrooms at Atlantic Technical College at 4700 Coconut Creek Parkway, Coconut Creek, FL 33063.  This training encompasses a minimum of 288 hours in classroom and hands-on training to complete the program.

On-Line: Through our partnership with ATC, we use Immerse2Learn; who have prepared industry leading system of courses for CNC and Manual Machining titled Total Machinist: which includes 30 course titles with each including numerous lessons under each title. This training requires a minimum of 144 hours over the course of the program.

OJT: Training and supporting each apprentice each day during the program is required for a minimum of 4000 hours. Time at work is spent to reinforce learned skills in the classroom and online.This approach provides a measured return-on-investment in training by awarding nationally recognized interim credentials towards their Completion of Apprenticeship Certificate from the Florida Department of Education which is recognized nationally by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment & Training Administration, Office of Apprenticeship.

For the apprentice, this means a more flexible approach to training, and environment to validate the levels of achievement, recognition within the industry, and a clear defined pathway to 18 college credit hours for an AS Degree in Industrial Engineering at Broward College.
